Alternatively known as a display adapter, graphics card, video adapter, video board, or video controller, a video card is an expansion card that connects to a computer motherboard. It is used to create a picture on a display; without a video card, you would not be able to see this page. More plainly, it's a piece of hardware inside your computer that processes images and video, some of the tasks normally handled by the CPU. Video cards are used by gamers in place of integrated graphics due to their extra processing power and video ram.

Below are two visual examples of what a video card may look like inside of a computer. First is a picture of an older model AGP video card with multiple types of connections and components on it. Second is an example of a more modern PCI Express video card used with today's gaming computers.

Note

Some motherboards may also use an onboard video card, which means the video card is not a separate expansion card like those shown below.

Video card ports

The pictures above also help illustrate the types of video ports used with video cards. For more information about any of these ports, click the links below.

In the past, VGA or SVGA was the most popular connection used with computer monitors. Today, most flat-panel displays utilize DVI or HDMI connectors.

Video card expansion slots (connections)

A video card expansion slot is where the card connects to the motherboard. In the picture above, the video card is inserted into the AGP expansion slot on the computer motherboard. Over the development of computers, there were several types of expansion slots used for video cards. Today, the most common expansion slot for video cards is PCIe, which replaced AGP, which replaced PCI, which replaced ISA.

Note

Some OEM computers and motherboards may have a video card onboard or integrated into the motherboard.

Can I install more than one video card?

Yes. Both AMDRadeon (utilizing CrossFire) and NVIDIAGeForce (utilizing SLI) cards are capable of running two or more video cards together.

Video card history

While graphics circuitry has been used in arcade games since the mid-1970s, it wasn't until the early 1980s that the first graphics chips emerged for computers. Developed by NEC, the High-Performance Graphics Display Controller 7220, or NEC 7220, was one of the earliest processing chips for computer graphics, capable of 4 MHz to 5.5 MHz clock speeds. It was one of the most popular and advanced graphics chips throughout the 1980s.

In the early 1990s, multiple developers started integrating 2D acceleration into their graphics chips, with S3 Graphics being the first. Named the S3 86C911, it utilized the ISA slot on a motherboard and featured 1 MB of video memory.

Developed by NVIDIA and released on October 11, 1999, the GeForce 256 was touted as the first video card for consumer PCs with 2D and 3D hardware-accelerated graphics in a single unit. The first GeForce 256 chips featured 32 MB SDR video memory and had a 166 MHz clock speed. Later versions of the GeForce 256 changed to DDR video memory for improved performance. The GeForce 256 helped pave the way forward towards the video cards we know and use today.

Many users wonder if it's possible to put more than one video card into a single computer. The answer is yes, but depends on the cards and whether or not you want them to work together (e.g., SLI or CrossFire). The following sections contain information on different scenarios.

  • Using multiple cards in general.
  • Using more than one card together.
  • Before you install.
  • Windows 98 multiple monitor issues.

Using multiple cards in general

If you'd like to install more than one card, but don't need them to work together, you need to meet the following conditions:

  1. There need to be available resources on the computer. By this we mean appropriate slots and space.
  2. Ensure you're not using an EGA, CGA, or VGA card in one computer.
  3. Ensure you're using an operating system that supports multiple monitors. Almost all modern operating systems support multiple monitors. Anything earlier than Windows 98 does not support multiple monitors.

Using more than one card together

User who are looking to use more than one card to increase their graphics processing power, such as an SLI or CrossFire setup, must meet the following requirements:

  1. You need two or more SLI or CrossFire capable GPUs and bridge to connect the cards.
  2. All cards must use the same GPU, but don't necessarily need to be from the same manufacturer.
  3. All cards need the same bus width and amount of VRAM.
  4. You cannot have two different SLI or CrossFire configurations. For example, you can't have two GTX 960s and two GTX 980s in the same machine (see number 2).
Note

Some OEM systems have restrictions on how many video cards work with their systems.

Note

SLI and CrossFire only work with GPUs that use a PCIe interface and are seated in a 16x or 8x PCIe expansion slot.

Before you install

Before installing a secondary video card, we recommend you review the below checklist first to help prevent possible issues in the future.

Windows 98 multiple monitor support requirements

For multiple monitor support to operate, you must meet the below requirements:

  1. You are running Direct X 5.0 or higher.
  2. You are using a PCI or AGP card listed below each card for each monitor.

Supported video cards:

*The Permedia video card cannot be used as the primary display adapter (the Permedia NT and Permedia-2 do not apply to this rule).

Windows 98 multiple monitor issues

The following tips help you resolve many common issues with a dual display setup in Windows 98.

Screen savers that only work on the primary monitor

Screen savers that are not designed for multiple monitors only work on the primary monitor. For a screen saver to be active on both monitors, the screen saver must support multiple monitors.

Unable to drag a window from one screen to another

This issue can occur by one of the below possibilities.

  1. The window is maximized, make sure that the window is sized appropriately to drag.
  2. Your monitor position is not set properly. Go into your display properties, and then verify that the secondary monitor is set to the appropriate position.

How to arrange multiple monitors
